A new school year is here—and as a parent, Junior admits something many mothers and fathers probably understand:
He's nervous.
New teachers. New expectations. New environments. New influences. And another year of trusting other people to play an important role in the development of our children.
But today's reflection comes back to a fundamental truth:
Our children's education starts at home.
Schools and teachers have an important responsibility, but parents cannot outsource the responsibility of preparing children for life. Character, discipline, respect, accountability, personal standards, critical thinking, and the values that guide their decisions must be reinforced long after the school day ends.
In Day 016 of Just a Thought... w/ Junior (A 120-Day Journey), Junior reflects on the emotions surrounding the beginning of a new school year and the responsibility parents carry for educating, guiding, and preparing their children.
Our job isn't simply to ask:
“What did you learn at school today?”
We also have to ask ourselves:
“What are we teaching them at home?”
